Arbitration is the ritual of weighing each party's grievances on a balance while slapping on a magic label called fairness. It pretends to soothe the clash of opinions but actually satisfies no one completely and sometimes even prolongs the quarrel. Though it sounds like a legal term, in practice it's entertainment for bystanders watching a mud fight in a meeting room. By applying the same rules to the weak and the powerful, it justifies the status quo under the banner of equality.

Arbitration is the ceremony in which two discontented parties sheath their verbal swords on a public stage, exchanging a fragrant bouquet of paperwork and fees. It can be called the art of triumphing over mutual hatred and contradictions at the discretion of a meddlesome third party. In practice, it continues until the loser swallows their grievances and the winner nods vigorously in self-satisfaction. Ultimately, a bizarre peace is forged, in which both claim the banner of justice while secretly nursing their discontent.

Conflict resolution is the sacred ritual where all parties appear to consent but ultimately only a third party’s proposal emerges victorious. It is the magic of silencing the loudest voice after endless exchanges of demands. While mouths chant peace, the settlement often inscribes the traces of victory and defeat on paper. No matter how much friction is smoothed, it ends up merely redistributing someone’s advantage.

Mediation is the art of inserting oneself between two quarreling parties, tossing innocuous words like confetti until one side waves the white flag. It pretends to listen to grievances, then grandly dubs the first to relent as the victor of "reconciliation." It functions as a social tourniquet, staunching the emotional hemorrhage of conflict. The mediator skillfully stages the dispute, maintaining a façade of neutrality while arranging the final bow. Success is measured when both parties nod and mumble "I suppose this will do," though in reality no one has gained anything.
