Civil religion is the intangible faith manufactured by the collective body called a nation. Raising flags, singing anthems, and ostracizing dissenters have become everyday rituals. In the name of patriotism and order, citizens pledge allegiance to one another. Reflected in this mirror is the cold silhouette of conformity and the suppression of reason beyond its bounds.
