remote control

A remote control is a slender magic wand that allows one to command TVs, air conditioners, and other machines without bruising their mechanical egos. From afar, it proclaims one’s indolence as justified tyranny. Press a wrong button, and it will incur curses; run on empty batteries, and it faces the harshest condemnations. It mocks the user’s anguish in seeking non-existent buttons, yet remains the indispensable idol to which all are hopelessly addicted.

snooze button

The snooze button is a small pact that buys a momentary peace from the alarm’s shriek. Each press is a confession of self-discipline’s failure and a decisive moment of surrender to one’s own sloth. A negative salvation device that martyrizes your future self while extending the lifespan of today. It functions only when moral judgment in the brain is offline, symbolizing weakness of will.

sweater

A sweater is a woolen cage into which one willingly submits to fend off winter cold. Each donning produces a double dose of self-satisfaction and fuzz balls, and at the slightest warmth, one panics—a sadist of fashion.

terrace

A terrace is a device that takes one step beyond the safe confines of indoors to absorb neighbors’ stares and outdoor air temperature in full. Try to make it Instagram-worthy and you end up cohabitating with insects; seek the night breeze and you get serenaded by traffic noise. Supposedly appreciating greenery, it often becomes a graveyard for neglected planters. The self-styled café selfie stage typically allies you with harsh sunlight and mischievous wind. The real pleasure lies in creating a little drama with a forgotten lock.

thermostat

A thermostat is a device that valiantly struggles to realize the impossible consensus of humans’ "just right" temperature. Once the set point is reached, it idles the heating or cooling only to resume its relentless toggling at the slightest deviation, turning your room into either a freezer or a sauna. Users fiddle with settings in search of comfort, but the machine remains unconvinced, perpetuating an eternal game of cat and mouse. Under the lofty banners of eco-friendliness and energy savings, it often runs mercilessly, forgotten with its power left on. Ultimately, the one truly in control isn’t us, but this tiny climate dictator that judges our world by its numeric whims.
