In practice, it's a ritual that conveys equal parts of 'You'll handle this, right?' expectation and 'If you fail, catastrophe follows' fear. The manager enjoys the mystical act of relinquishing power with one hand while retaining unspoken instructions with the other. The subordinate carries the weight, forever haunted by the question, 'Why me?'

A process lauded as sharing authority but in practice shifts the entire burden onto subordinates. The moment a manager says “You’re empowered,” it magically transforms into an obligation to solve every problem alone. Touted as a motivational mantra, it actually supplies a brand new set of pitfalls for the unwary. Empowerment: the modern micro-management tactic of giving autonomy accompanied by a clause of “Don’t come crying to me.”
