A handwritten letter is the ultimate analog communication that forces one’s unique handwriting upon an unseen recipient. Its silence inside an envelope is deemed proof of affection—far more brutal than an email left unread. Scribble passionately, and it’s “romance”; write neatly, and it’s “sincerity”—yet in most cases it becomes nothing more than a tool of obligation and self-promotion. In any event, this romantic scrap of paper is doomed to be opened once and discarded forever.
