Advent is the four-week “sacred standby” during which believers ready themselves for the birth of Christ while unwittingly preparing a feast of tinsel and credit card statements. Supposed to be a season of penance and contemplation, it has been co-opted into a pageant of commercial excess in which pine-scented candles burn alongside the flame of consumer debt. Participants light their Advent wreaths as they watch their bank balances smolder with equal fervor, performing an enigmatic dual ritual of faith and fiscal imprudence.

A spring ritual in which Christians briefly resurrect someone claimed to have died. Despite its name, the ‘resurrection’ amounts to an annual rerun of the same theatrical stunt. Dyeing eggs and sonically motivating rabbits to mobilize grown children are honored traditions. Under the banner of faith, sweets are exchanged and indulgences traded in an open marketplace. Ultimately, it is a peculiar social experiment where participants joyfully reenact a forgotten myth.

A holiday card is a ceremonial sheet draped in hypocrisy only at year-end, ‘renewing’ past friendships. The sender feigns sincerity while the recipient receives a package of wry smiles and guilt in equal measure. The more one pays postage and expends effort, the more the value of friendship crumbles noisily. The lavish design on the surface is mere makeup to conceal emotional distance; the true purpose is a mutual yearly affirmation disguised as self-hypnosis.
