An elevator speech is a brief, high-speed confession of one’s own brilliance that hijacks the listener’s time. It promises rapid enlightenment but delivers clichéd refrains in place of meaningful content. Its ideal is a line so impactful it shakes the world; its reality is bullet-point drivel. It tests the audience’s patience, concluding with a flourish of business card swaps as if to seal a fireworks display. Its success rate is often lower than the probability that an actual elevator will have available space.

An informational interview is a ritual of extracting free knowledge under the guise of ‘research,’ while justifying one’s own anxiety as ‘professional development.’ Participants flatter each other as experts without bearing any real responsibility, walking away with little more than a bullet point on a resume. For companies, it’s often just small talk and free advertising masquerading as mentorship. Attendees furiously take notes only to later forget everything or realize the advice doesn’t apply to their situation. Ultimately, it’s a charade of mutual self-congratulation preserving face and avoiding real work.

Job search is the modern rite of passage where one submits mountains of resumes and application forms as tickets to a hopeful future, only to be scrutinized anew in the labyrinth of corporate selection. In front of interviewers one proudly declares motivations, while behind the scenes it’s a relentless copy-paste competition of templates. Every decision floods the aspirant with joy or despair, all in anticipation of the digital talisman known as the offer email. Succeed and you sign the indentured contract of a junior employee, fail and you merely earn the right to challenge the next corporate odyssey.
