Neighbor relationship is the smallest unit of social contract, a curious mix of discordant noises through a single wall and faint acts of kindness. In theory, it promises mutual support, but in reality it pairs daytime nap disturbances with obligatory nods. It fulfills both the voyeuristic urge to observe each other's lives and the silent monitoring at once. The only true measure of proximity is the frequency and timing of one another’s trash day.
