A citizen assembly is a theater where good intentions and apathy collide in public. Attendees produce infinite opinions, eternally squandering time. Proclaiming the noble word 'participation', they nurture a hotbed of safe shirking, passing responsibility to organizers. When no decision ever materializes, true democracy quietly scoffs behind its back.

Citizenship is the ceremonial contract of pseudo-marriage between the individual and the state. It bestows a dual shackle of rights and duties that one can invoke or ignore at will. Once celebrated as a badge of pride, it has now morphed into an excuse for passport delays and unpaid taxes. While offering a sense of belonging, it paradoxically becomes a chain of obligation for those seeking autonomy.

Civic engagement is the grand social ritual of purchasing applause and criticism at once, only to be relegated to the minutes of a meeting. It is also a form of entertainment in which one loudly declares an opinion, trusts someone else to summarize it, and delights in the grand self-deception when no one ever does. From municipal surveys to street demonstrations, its purpose is to share the feeling of 'being involved,' while substantive change is reduced to nothing more than the color of sticky notes. It is also the space where organized indifference is practiced most efficiently.

Participation is the grandiloquent phrase that drags individuals into collective decision-making. The louder one shouts "Let's participate," the heavier their own feet feel. It provides the ultimate escape hatch for self-satisfaction through symbolic acts like casting a vote or signing a name, while shirking any real change. It scatters the illusion of shared achievement, yet cunningly shifts the burden of action onto others. Truly, it is the 'flower of the group,' in reality nothing more than an empty decoration.

Participatory democracy is the ritual of soliciting citizens' opinions only to entrust the same politicians with power at every election. Referendum questionnaires accumulate into mountains of paperwork, while actual policy decisions are made in secret as usual. Under the lofty slogan we hear your voice, busy citizens end up merely warming chairs in meeting rooms. Heated debates roar in the halls but inevitably the loudest lobby group’s proposal is adopted. Thus the gap between ideal and reality is left to rest until the next participatory event.
