arbitration

Arbitration is the ceremony in which two discontented parties sheath their verbal swords on a public stage, exchanging a fragrant bouquet of paperwork and fees. It can be called the art of triumphing over mutual hatred and contradictions at the discretion of a meddlesome third party. In practice, it continues until the loser swallows their grievances and the winner nods vigorously in self-satisfaction. Ultimately, a bizarre peace is forged, in which both claim the banner of justice while secretly nursing their discontent.

aristocracy

Aristocracy is the system by which those wielding pedigree and wealth don the mask of public good to monopolize privilege. Under the banner of equality and liberty, it fences citizen voices behind gilded bars. It is a theatrical device where refined gentlemen and ladies secretly engineer policy in closed chambers.

armament

Armament is a theme park attraction where states display the flashiest toys of war, boasting of triggers that only they can pull. They claim to ensure safety, yet flood neighboring countries with ornamental cannons that disturb even distant villagers' sleep. The true enemy is the insecurity and vanity that weapons themselves engender, and every treaty is but a sleight of hand to conceal that reality. As the count of armaments grows, someone’s future is inexorably chipped away. The spectacle of gear meant to prevent war thriving like a stage set awaiting conflict is a modern tragicomedy.

arms control

Arms control is a theater where nations peer into each other's arsenals while praying for peace. It is a ritual of exchanging certificates of trust and at the same time laying the groundwork for the next arms race. Treaties are monsters with paper spines—giving comfort when signed and returning to scraps when broken. One might call it a farcical tightrope walk between ideals and reality.

arms race

An arms race, n. The act of hoarding ever more weapons to loudly proclaim one’s security. Yet each weapon serves as a bat signal, summoning neighbors to mimic the same performance. Intended to guarantee safety, it instead amplifies mutual fear until no one emerges victorious in this grand farce.

assimilation

Assimilation is the ritual of stripping away the pardon called individuality and intoxicatedly drinking from the chalice called the collective. Different voices are gradually erased by the cacophony renamed harmony, until everyone ends up as a uniform chorus. The colors of freedom are immediately repainted into monochrome sketches, and difference is shunned as dissonance. Resistance is not a virtue but stamped with the mark of discord, and participation becomes an obligation.

astroturfing

Astroturfing is the glamorous stagecraft of propaganda dressed as grassroots activism, conjured by PR firms. It pretends to be the authentic voices of citizens while secretly manipulating public opinion with money and algorithms. No banner screaming 'citizen movement' is more suspicious, no slogan more of a cheap fairy tale. It masquerades as an autonomous uprising only to become the puppet of corporate interests.

asylum

Asylum is the diplomatic drama in which one voluntarily chooses an unstable status, savoring both the pity and indifference of others simultaneously. Once hailed as the prologue to epic heroism, it now entails navigating a labyrinth of paperwork and interviews. Border officials pretend to welcome, while scheming the next bureaucratic obstacle in private. The asylum seeker is forced to transform from fugitive to refugee to reluctant political activist, yet the title brings few privileges. By the time they reach new lands, they are often drawn into an identity crisis wedged between homeland and adopted nation.

authoritarianism

Authoritarianism is the high-minded system of imprisoning individual will under the guise of absolute commands. It excels at chanting the mantra of order while domestically drowning dissent. Its greatest charm lies in silencing criticism and mandating obedience as a universal virtue. Stability is offered in exchange for freedom, which becomes a mere ornament.

autocracy

Autocracy is a system of rule that dresses itself in control while smothering liberty. It proclaims authority loudly but insists on obedience in practice, a genuine paradox. Citizens’ voices must pass through the filters of surveillance and censorship, rarely reaching their destination intact. The rule of law serves merely as ornamental veneer, reshaped at the whim of those in power. It promises safety and security, yet its deepest fear is the populace’s autonomy.
