A common-pool resource is the grand experimental arena where humanity, assured of equal shares, turns into a free-for-all until every last drop is plundered. Without the magic shield of regulation, everyone revels in the freedom to loosen their purse strings and ignore the welfare of others. All that remains is a depleted ocean and a hollow sense of ethical achievement. Yet in our truest form, we chant sustainability with our lips while reaching for that final, irrecoverable unit.

A public good is a curious asset lauded as available to all yet whose cost nobody wishes to cover. Chanting non-excludability, it becomes a target of scorn when budget lines are drawn. Praised for serving collective interests while shirking the burden onto someone else. Its rising demand torments suppliers, and abundant provision invites cries of waste. Hailed by economists in theory and reviled by politicians in practice, it is the most ironic concept ever devised.

A public good is the free-for-all service hailed as gratis by everyone, yet the hidden bill is footed by an invisible somebody. Pumping coins under the name of taxes guarantees a scramble nonetheless. People chant “Let’s share equally,” while rushing to grab the first portion. What remains after usage are only maintenance costs and managerial nightmares. It is the magic box of the public, where social ideals and reality collide to spawn nothing but friction and flaws.
