audition

An audition is a so-called showcase of talent that in reality serves as a cruel filtration machine weighing anxiety against hope. Contestants seek to shine, only to hurl their self-esteem into the void of the judges' deadpan expressions. A fleeting moment on stage feels eternal, masking innumerable hidden failures. Victors bask in the spotlight of praise, while the defeated vanish backstage like ghosts. In this arena, dreams often are ceremonies of disillusionment.

backstage

Backstage refers to the unseen area behind theatrical and event productions. It is the sandbag of sweat and tears for countless individuals supporting the glory on stage. Invisible to the audience, it is also the blind spot where a grand curtain call is forged. More often than not, it becomes a silent court where scripts and lighting mishaps determine fate. Behind every performer’s smile, every botched cue is spoken of as if it were a sacred mantra.

black box theatre

A black box theatre is a budget-friendly stage confined within a black box that crushes elaborate sets and seats into a minimalistic sacrificial offering. Directors preach “freedom” while designing an artistic cage that imprisons the audience’s imagination in emptiness. Actors quake at the sudden absence of sound or light, and spectators wander, perpetually lost about where to look. In this space where aesthetics and austerity coexist in paradox, the very “nothingness” of the stage becomes its greatest theatrical effect. Both actors and audience are ejected into an exhausted void at curtain call—a masochistic playground of modern theatre.

catwalk

A catwalk is the elongated stage where human statues parade, pretending ignorance of gravity. Models stride with the poise of tightrope walkers, as if daring the world to interrupt their equilibrium. Spectators applaud the display of elegance while secretly calculating the fatal distance to the edge. Behind the glitz lies a gauntlet of stares and split-second timing. It reveals that beauty is merely the art of surviving a precarious balance under bright lights.

crisis stage

The crisis stage is the opening act in the drama of testing bonds. It delivers the perverse thrill of wielding a veto on apologies just as communication collapses. Meanwhile, you wander endlessly in a sandbox of emotions, trapped in a labyrinth of resentment. The real delight is forgetting who wrote this absurd script in the first place.

Curtain Call

A curtain call is the post-show ritual where performers return to the stage to collect coupons called applause, a glamorous act of mutual hypocrisy. Audiences erase their discomfort from the performance with clapping, while actors timidly harvest fleeting glory. This ceremony, where vanity and self-image intertwine, operates like a recycling business of praise. It is the quintessential manifestation of collective egoism, filling the void between the finale and the next encore with borrowed recognition.

cyclorama

A cyclorama is a colossal sheet lurking backstage, promising infinite vistas but delivering nothing more than a white canvas lit by lights. It changes moods with a flick of illumination, worshipped as a deity during performances but condemned to the dumpster the moment the curtain falls. Its bulk is a staff’s nightmare as they wrestle to roll it up, whispering eternal regrets of "if only it were lighter…".

domesticity stage

The domesticity stage is the period when lovers learn the art of confronting the expired milk lurking at the back of the fridge. Unspoken demands for rearranging furniture and petty disputes over laundry machine settings add color to otherwise mundane days. What was once called romance morphs into washing dishes at midnight, and expressions of love waft in measured doses of detergent. Devouring each other's missing socks becomes a favorite pastime, capturing the very essence of this stage. Yet the true test of domesticity lies in the long apprenticeship leading up to it.

follow spot

A follow spot is the merciless light stalker on stage. No matter where the performer flees, it illuminates them with the devotion of a lovesick stalker. Behind the scenes, technicians fiddle with its brightness to the beat of acting emotions while this celestial dictator of light vies endlessly for attention. Audiences perceive it as divine radiance, backstage staff see it as a nuisance. It has the power to glamorize every performance but also the threat to ruin it in a single misjudged shift. In the hands of its operator, it can be either savior or tyrant of the scene—a luminous vandal.

Fresnel light

A Fresnel light is the sinister overlord of stage and film, sacrificing crew sweat and electricity bills in the name of illuminating actors. Slide its ridged lens and the beam broadens, forcing the stage manager into a death struggle with brightness levels and gusts of heat. It capriciously shifts its focus to dramatize expressions—though it’s unclear anyone really notices the subtle changes. Emitting heat along with light, it sometimes evaporates even the sweat on the lighting technician’s brow. It highlights invisible stagehands while secretly basking in its own narcissistic glow, the epitome of overengineered luminous excess.

gobo

A gobo is a metal template in stage lighting whose primary function seems to sabotage lighting effects and instill mysterious tension in the lighting crew. Though praised for enabling countless patterns, it actually mass-produces blackouts and unexpected shadows, generating shock rather than the audience’s anticipated spectacle. Intended as a mirror of the director’s vision, it soon overwhelms everything with unforeseen silhouettes, emerging as the shadowy protagonist behind the scenes.

integration stage

Integration stage is the ceremonial tantrum where two parties pretend to mask each other's faults under the pretense of unity. People expect deep bonds, but in reality they only impose their own egos on others. The praised closeness subtly breeds possessiveness and friction, ultimately sparking conflict. Group psychology utters integration like a magical incantation, cleverly sealing away individual differences. The inevitable result is a paradoxical trap of bizarre cohesion wrapped in inward rebellion.
