Stage theory is a comforting concept that reduces the bewildering complexity of human development to a block diagram, allowing critics to stack up excuses one step at a time. By laying out neat boxes in advance, the chaotic setbacks of real life somehow seem purposeful. As long as there are steps, one may gloat over others’ failures while framing personal stagnation as a noble ‘next stage.’ Even if one spectacularly falls, stage theory functions as a ridiculous self-justification framework. In short, it transforms life’s messy difficulties into a simple staircase tale for everyone to discuss from on high.
