Compassion is the act of opening the door to suffering, luxuriating in another’s misery, then whimsically offering a single drop of relief. Overuse emits the fragrant aroma of self-congratulation and is often dismissed as mere performative empathy. Though claimed to resonate with sorrow, it is frequently discarded in cold cost-benefit analyses. At its core, it serves as propaganda for the ego’s expansion. By displaying compassion, one advertises their own virtue while instilling reluctance and guilt in its recipient.

A get-well message is a ritualistic phrase that feigns praying for a patient’s recovery while actually soothing the sender’s guilt and self-satisfaction. Once a heartwarming wish, it transmutes into a thin comfort delivered via notification sound. Cloaked in concern, it is in fact an obligation-driven imposition of social niceties. Often sent more to protect one’s own image than to convey true care, it performs a self-serving act. Words wander off alone, and their ironic power reveals itself most when they fail to arrive in time.

Sympathy is the art of savoring another’s misfortune as a dessert of self-indulgence. Others’ tears become the lubricant for one’s own conscience, consumed as proof of virtue. The most noble display of empathy vanishes the moment the conversation shifts. It serves more often as a checkbox to appease one’s guilt than as real assistance. In the end, the victim’s wounds remain while the sympathizer departs with a proud smile.
