Group Outing

Inside a car of cheerful faces, concealing an endless debate session
The seemingly innocent question 'Where are we going?' signals the start of a marathon of negotiation known as the group outing.
Love & People

Description

A group outing masquerades as innocent leisure, but is in reality an endless coordination meeting to reconcile everyone’s opinions. In the car, silent heroes and unyielding warriors wage clandestine battles. After the death match of deciding the destination, by the time the chosen spot has been reached and selfies taken, all participants are utterly exhausted. On the way home, the hollow question “What’s next?” repeats with no reset, a joint torture session under the guise of socializing.

  • Map says 10 minutes, but nobody wants to look so we’re not moving.
  • I said I wanted to see the ocean, but apparently five people are mountain lovers…

  • A quiet spot? Is everyone’s phone notifications off?
  • ‘Let’s go with spontaneity’—who said that was part of the plan?

  • I wonder, are we actually enjoying ourselves?
  • Once we agreed on next, we all whispered ’not that again…’

Narratives

  • At lunch, the debate over the menu became the main event; by the time food arrived, everyone was famished.
  • Even the timing for taking photos required unanimous approval, freezing each smile bit by bit.
  • On the return journey, silence reigned; nobody proposed a next destination, leaving only fatigue masquerading as social cohesion.
  • The café suggestion from the eldest member was unanimously buried for being over budget.
  • The boating plan collapsed over a life jacket size dispute.
  • The matching keychains bought as souvenirs were nowhere to be found by trip’s end.
  • Every route change illuminated negotiation fatigue across glowing smartphone screens.
  • The forecast promised sunshine, but a cloud of conflict loomed in our hearts.
  • Though unspoken, we all nursed a fear of future outings while savoring the difficulty of group activities.

  • Arriving one minute late shattered trust in an instant.
  • The question ‘Where next?’ amplified an intangible sense of unease.
